German handball champion SC Magdeburg finished in second place at the historic Wartburg Cup in Eisenach. After victories over TBV Lemgo (35–30) on Friday and host ThSV Eisenach (40–30) on Saturday, the team from Magdeburg suffered a narrow 32–33 (15–16) loss to league rival SG Flensburg-Handewitt on Sunday. SCM thus concludes its preseason with a loss.
Host Eisenach had lost 28–31 to the eventual tournament winner on Friday evening. As a result, the Thuringians played Lemgo for third place and ultimately suffered a clear 30–39 (12–20) defeat. Eisenach’s first competitive match takes them to Schleswig-Holstein—on August 28, ThSV will kick off its Bundesliga season in Flensburg. The SCM begins its competitive schedule as early as August 22: At the Super Cup in Munich, Magdeburg will face Cup champion Füchse Berlin.
