Before leaving for the World Cup with the Ivory Coast, Yan Diomande writes to his late sister. Now, this emotional and moving letter is being published.

“I’ll prove that you were right”—he’ll give it his all to do so, writes Yan Diomande at the end of his letter, published shortly before the Ivory Coast’s second World Cup match against Germany on Saturday. He begins with: “Dear Roxane, do you remember…” It is a letter to his sister, who died at the age of 15 and meant everything to the Bundesliga pro from RB Leipzig.

“Even before I had real soccer cleats, you told everyone, ‘My brother is going to be the best in the world,’” writes the 19-year-old. The magazine “The Players’ Tribune” published the letter in full, along with photos from the forward’s youth. “I will achieve what you predicted—I swear it,” writes Diomande.

He writes this because he cannot speak about it. “I’m writing this because I want you to know: I’ll make sure your memory lives on,” Diomande says. According to the letter, his sister died a few weeks before his debut in March 2025 in Spain for Leganés.

“Since your death, I’ve just felt empty”

“Someone kept calling me from home. I was annoyed. I didn’t understand why they kept calling,” writes the 19-year-old. “I answered, and they didn’t even go about it gently. You know how it is at our house. No emotions. Just… ‘Your sister is dead.’” Someone had slipped something into her drink at a party, and she never woke up again. “You were 15,” writes Diomande.

Before her death, he still had feelings. “Today I don’t feel anything anymore. It’s as if I’m not even human anymore. Since your death, I’ve just been empty,” writes Diomande, who recounts the happy moments he shared with his little sister.

“Do you remember how we used to sit together and dream of moving to France? (...) You were the only one who always believed that I could become the next Cristiano (Ronaldo), while everyone else laughed,” Diomande writes in the letter penned before the World Cup. “Everything you said has come true. Tomorrow we’re actually heading to the World Cup. Really. Your brother will play for the Ivory Coast, just like (Didier) Drogba, just like Yaya (Touré), just like Gervinho.”

The soccer field as a place of longing

The young star also talks about his time in Germany. After his transfer to RB, he was constantly late. “Well, not really late. I was on time—which in Germany means you’re way too late,” he writes. “So you know what I did. I started showing up 90 minutes early for everything. I was always there so early that the guys started calling me ‘the German.’”

The soccer field is the only place “where I still feel at home,” writes Diomande. “There I’m calm, and there I can talk to you. I just wish you were still here so I could tell you ...”
