Despite Taking the Lead: Magdeburg Comes Away with Just One Point in Fürth

1. FC Magdeburg heads into the international break with a draw. 11,491 spectators watched the 1-1 (1-1) match at SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Emmanuel Iyoha (5') gave FCM the lead, and Omar Sillah (20') equalized. With ten points, Magdeburg has seven more points than it did at the same time last year. 

“It’s a little strange—sure, we picked up a point here in Fürth, but it somehow felt different. I think with a little luck, we might have been able to score another goal,” said FCM captain Dominik Reimann, expressing his frustration. 

Both teams capitalized on their first scoring chances

Magdeburg was without Baris Atik due to illness; Torben Müsel replaced the playmaker in the starting lineup. Müsel played centrally, while Moritz-Broni Kwarteng mostly took over Atik’s left wing. In addition, Tobias Müller returned to central defense after serving his suspension. Magdeburg immediately shone with efficiency: Herbert Bockhorn headed the ball down for Iyoha, who put the visitors ahead with their first chance. 

Fürth only gradually found their footing, but then scored on their first chance as well: After a VAR review, Sillah’s goal stood. Prior to that, the FCM had needlessly fumbled the ball. The equalizer gave Fürth a boost of confidence; they allowed Magdeburg fewer touches and kept the visitors pinned mainly in their own half. It wasn’t until the 38th minute that FCM made another offensive push, but Mateusz Zukowski was denied by Florian Hellstern’s quick reflex save. 

Second half with few highlights

Right after the restart, FCM goalkeeper Dominik Reimann stopped a shot by goal-scorer Sillah, and Fürth continued to apply pressure immediately afterward. The FCM was slow to break free and struggled to convert their own attacks into shots on goal. The hosts had the wings well under control, and the Elbe-based team lacked creativity in the center as well.

Coach Petrik Sander tried a double substitution, bringing on Felipe Chavez and Richmond Tachie. Even though Magdeburg had more of the play, the visitors rarely created chances in the box. Fürth posed only a few threats; overall, the hosts’ goalkeeper had significantly more work to do than Reimann in the FCM net. Since neither team made a decisive mistake, the match ended in a draw.
