Five Goal Scorers: Magdeburg Shows New Strength on Offense

Second-division soccer club 1. FC Magdeburg has established itself among the top teams after five matchdays and, in the process, has also found new versatility on offense. In the 3-0 victory over the previously undefeated visitors from Kaiserslautern, new signing Emmanuel Iyoha particularly shone on the right wing.

The 28-year-old scored the first two-goal game of his career, and the forward was understandably relieved afterward. “We were just clinical up front,” he said. “That’s a quality we have. It’s just fun for everyone right now.” With three goals this season in five games, Iyoha has already scored as many as he did in three full seasons in Düsseldorf. 

From defender to forward—again

There, however, he mostly played as a fullback; in Magdeburg, they’ve turned him back into a forward. FCM coach Petrik Sander is no stranger to such position changes—last season, he already converted Polish newcomer Mateusz Zukowski from right back to center forward. Zukowski repaid that trust with 19 goals that season.

This season, Zukowski hasn’t quite found his stride yet, but he has teammates who are stepping up to score. Five different scorers have accounted for the FCM’s ten goals; leading the way are Iyoha and Alexander Nollenberger with three goals each, followed by Zukowski with two.

Magdeburg seems to have moved past its heavy reliance on the Polish player’s goals. Iyoha views the competition positively: “We push each other,” and you can also see how Baris Atik “is happy for you. Everyone is happy for everyone else—it’s very heartfelt.”

Will there be another spectacular match in Fürth?

That could be important in the next game, as Magdeburg will face Fürth on Friday. Last season’s matches against the “Kleeblatt” were pure spectacle—both games ended in 5–4 away wins, with Zukowski scoring four goals in Fürth alone. Even though FCM has been more defensively stable this year compared to last and probably doesn’t want to get drawn into an open slugfest, it’s certainly reassuring that the offense is clicking. 

When it comes to assist providers, Magdeburg is even more versatile—in addition to Baris Atik with four assists, six other players have each contributed one assist. Among them is Moritz-Broni Kwarteng: The returning number 10 is finding his footing at FCM more and more. If Magdeburg can maintain this positive trend and pick up the three points in Franconia, they’ll head into the international break with a comfortable 12-point lead.
