FC Bayern need not fear any consequences after VAR intervention

In the Bundesliga opener between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, the video assistant intervened unlawfully. Nevertheless, the champions do not have to worry about their 6:0 victory.

Despite the non-compliant use of VAR in FC Bayern Munich's Bundesliga opener against RB Leipzig, the defending champions need not fear any consequences under sporting law. DFB referee spokesman Alexander Feuerherdt told the German Press Agency.

The DFB rules stipulate that a match is always awarded even if "inadmissible situations/decisions are investigated during a video review". Accordingly, a disallowance of Munich's 6:0 victory at the green table would be ruled out in the event of an appeal by Leipzig.

DFB admits error

Before the supposed RB goal of honour in Friday's match, referee Florian Badstübner, his assistants and the fourth official had overlooked the fact that Leipzig's Castello Lukeba had taken a free-kick incorrectly. Instead of playing the ball, Lukeba had simply dribbled off with it.

After fierce intervention from Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich, who was shown a yellow card for his actions, Badstübner, after prior consultation with the video assistant referee, withdrew the goal. The DFB conceded that the VAR should not have intervened in this situation. "The subsequent scoring of the goal was checked by the VAR, but strictly speaking, checking the way a free kick is taken in the run-up to a goal is not one of its tasks," Feuerherdt told "Kicker".
