In Dresden, many kings will fall in the coming days—on the chessboard. The German Chess Summit features 13 tournaments. Some games will also be played outdoors.

Starting Thursday (July 16), Dresden will host the German Chess Summit. A total of 13 tournaments will be held through July 26, according to the organizer. The summit brings together elite and recreational chess: In addition to the title matches for the national elite, the event will feature the German Senior Championships, national blitz and rapid chess competitions, and the final of the German Amateur Chess Championship—with over 300 qualified finalists from all over Germany.

Diverse supporting program for fans

Alongside the competitions, the public can look forward to a diverse supporting program with free admission. This coming Saturday, the Chess Summit will become a meeting place for fans, curious onlookers, and families alike. The grounds of the International Congress Center are set to transform into a giant chessboard. “Anyone who thought chess was only for quiet tournament halls will be proven wrong here: Hands-on activities, exhibitions, live commentary, and simultaneous games with a grandmaster will turn the Chess Summit into an open city festival,” the organizers said.

Chessboxers in Powerful Action

Competitors in the discipline of chessboxing will also be in action. This is a combat sport that combines chess and boxing. The competitors take turns facing off in rounds of chess and boxing. Another highlight is coming up this Thursday: The Großer Garten will become the venue for the “King’s Game.”

Dresden Is This Year’s Chess Capital

Dresden holds the title of Chess Capital this year and is celebrating a double anniversary. The Dresden Chess Club was founded 150 years ago. One hundred years ago, the Chess Congress was also held here. Dresden is the hometown of Grandmaster Wolfgang Uhlmann (1935–2020). He is considered a chess legend of the GDR, having won the national championship eleven times and represented his country just as many times at the Chess Olympiads. Around 1970, he was among the world’s best and even made it to the Candidates Tournament for the World Championship.
