Mia and Matteo will be the most popular first names for newborns in Saxony in 2024. This is according to the annual ranking by amateur name researcher Knud Bielefeld. The two names replace Emilia and Emil, which held the top position in the Free State last year.
Emilia took second place for girls' names this year, followed by Emma, Hannah, Ella and Frieda. For boys' names, Emil fell back to second place, closely followed by Finn, Oskar, Noah and Theo. According to Bielefeld's analysis, parents in Saxony give the names Egon, Erwin, Gerda, Hazel, Hermine and Kurt much more frequently than in other federal states.
Noah is the top name for boys nationwide, followed by Matteo. Among girls' names, Emilia leads the way nationwide, taking second place in Saxony. Mia, the number one in Saxony, only achieved fifth place nationwide.
