The television tower has been closed since 1991. Now the Dresden City Council is providing around 7.9 million euros to revitalize the landmark. What is planned with it.

The city of Dresden will contribute around 7.9 million euros for the revitalization of the television tower and the surrounding area. This was decided by the city council at its meeting on Thursday. The TV tower, which was a popular excursion destination with a café and viewing platforms during the GDR era, has been closed to visitors for 35 years.

The city's money is a prerequisite for a total of 25.6 million euros to be invested in the renovation of the tower, among other things, the city announced on request. Half of the money is to come from federal funding, the rest from the Free State of Bavaria and the city budget, according to the corresponding draft resolution.

Tower under monument protection

The Dresden television tower was built in the 1960s and is a listed building. The building has been closed to the public since 1991. Until then, according to the city, around 200,000 visitors a year visited the viewing platform of the 250-metre-high tower. The aim of the project is to put the building to public use.

The majority of the city's money - around 5.1 million euros - will go towards revitalizing the TV tower itself. A further two million or so is earmarked for a parking lot and new paths, among other things, as the city announced on request.
