With their new initiative, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony aim to pool their expertise and continue researching alternatives for energy production. The focus is particularly on one topic.

A new initiative for high-energy-density physics has been launched in Rostock. Through the “High Energy Density Initiative (HEDI),” the University of Rostock and the Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf aim to pool their expertise in this field, according to a spokeswoman for the State Chancellery of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The founding event was also attended by Manuela Schwesig (SPD), Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Michael Kretschmer (CDU), Minister-President of the Free State of Saxony. Accordingly, the initiative’s development will be funded by the federal government as well as the two federal states.

Schwesig: A Special Day for Science

“Today is a special day for science in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony,” Schwesig stated. “We need the energy transition and renewable energy to protect the environment and to be independent in energy production.” At the same time, she said, it makes sense to continue researching alternatives—including the various possibilities in fusion research. The joint initiative between Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will also create jobs in science and research.

Kretschmer: Fusion Research Offers Opportunities

“Saxony is a strong hub for science and research with excellent universities and research institutions. The Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf is a prime example of the Free State’s innovative strength,” said Kretschmer. The collaboration pools existing expertise to tap into new energy sources. Fusion research offers great opportunities for a secure, climate-neutral, and long-term energy supply. The project will also strengthen the scientific excellence and competitiveness of Germany and Europe.
