The Young Socialists in Saxony are calling for fundamental changes to the police law. They are warning against new surveillance powers and are calling for an open debate within the SPD.

The Saxon Young Socialists are putting pressure on their party over the new police law. Ahead of the Saxony SPD’s extraordinary state party convention on Saturday in Dresden, the party’s youth wing reiterated its criticism of the planned amendment. In a motion to the party convention, they call on the state parliamentary group not to approve the bill in its current form and to work toward fundamental changes.

“The ruling by the Saxon Constitutional Court obligates the legislature to correct unconstitutional provisions. It does not obligate it to introduce new surveillance powers at the same time,” explained Juso state leader Mats Rudolph. The Jusos are particularly critical of the fact that the constitutional court’s requirements and the introduction of new powers for automated data analysis, biometric evaluations, and other intrusions have been combined into a single legislative package.

Jusos insist on a fundamental debate within the party

From the Jusos’ perspective, the necessary political debate on new surveillance powers was neglected. “Although it has been known since the Constitutional Court’s ruling that an amendment to police law would be necessary, the SPD state parliamentary group has not initiated a fundamental debate within the party,” Rudolph criticized. A clear stance is now expected from the party convention.

BSW helps minority government secure a majority in parliament

The CDU-SPD minority coalition had previously agreed on the legislative amendment with Sahra Wagenknecht’s Alliance. This ensures a majority in the state parliament for the proposal. According to SPD domestic policy expert Albrecht Pallas, the agreement on reforming police law creates a “solid foundation that equally addresses the security needs of the population and the protection of fundamental rights.”
