A broad alliance in Leipzig wants to mobilize against racism and right-wing extremism with large demonstrations ahead of the local and European elections as well as the state elections this year. More than 100 organizations and citizens have signed the appeal of the alliance "Hand in Hand for Democracy and Human Rights", according to a statement on Sunday. These include associations, parties, trade unions, parishes and initiatives, as well as personalities such as Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung (SPD) and opera director Tobias Wolff.

"We must not allow right-wing extremists to use hatred, contempt for humanity and lies to grab power and shake the foundations of our constitution: Human dignity is inviolable. Of every human being," emphasized Jung. It is time to join forces to defend our democracy and values, added Manuela Grimm from DGB Leipzig-Northern Saxony. "Because extreme right-wingers like the AfD want to destroy these foundations of our society."

Accordingly, demonstrations are planned for June 8 and August 25. On June 9, new local representatives and the EU Parliament will be elected in Saxony, followed by a new state parliament on September 1.
