Prime Minister and CDU state leader Michael Kretschmer is his party's top candidate for the state elections in Saxony on September 1. As expected, the 48-year-old was elected first on the state list with 94.8 percent of the votes at his party's representative assembly on Saturday. The almost 200 delegates responded with rhythmic applause. Kretschmer spoke of a "great signal". When he was nominated four years ago, he received 96.3 percent.

In a speech, Kretschmer got the delegates in the mood for the election campaign. He spoke of a directional decision. "A lot is at stake in this election," he said, spreading optimism: "I am certain that we will become the strongest force." In the latest polls, the AfD finished ahead of the CDU.

Kretschmer once again spoke out against a minority government. The background to this is the fact that the current coalition of CDU, Greens and SPD no longer has a majority in the polls.

We need stable conditions and not an experiment, said Kretschmer. The government must come from the center-right. Clear conditions are needed "because Saxony is at stake". Kretschmer thus picked up on the motto of the state representatives' meeting. He received a lot of applause for his 40-minute speech.
