The Chemnitz City Council has decided to introduce an accommodation tax for visitors. The tax is to be introduced at the turn of the year, the city announced Wednesday. It is to be levied in hotels, motels, inns, guesthouses, vacation accommodations and campgrounds.

Full-year guests are to pay five percent on top of their overnight price in the future. Minors, as well as guests attending events for their education or studies, are exempt from the tax.

The introduction of the lodging tax is intended to generate additional revenue in the city budget. The city expects just under 2.3 million euros in the coming year. In 2025, when Chemnitz is European Capital of Culture, even around 3.5 million euros are expected.

In Dresden there is already an accommodation tax, it is to be expanded from July and then also levied for official overnight stays. The city expects to be able to collect just under 14 million euros a year in the future instead of the previous 10. There is also to be an accommodation tax in Leipzig from April.
