Eisenbahnstraße in Leipzig is a crime hotspot and has been Saxony's only weapons ban zone for seven years. But the zone is to be lifted and there is a first step towards this.

The only weapons ban zone in Saxony around Leipzig's Eisenbahnstraße will now have a permanent police station. From this Wednesday (June 25), three officers will be on site from Monday to Thursday as contact persons, according to a police spokesperson. The station is a central component of a plan of action by the city of Leipzig to finally abolish the weapons ban zone in the street.

The zone was set up in November 2018 to improve the security situation along the crime hotspot Eisenbahnstraße. Certain weapons may not be carried in the area, which is around 70 soccer pitches in size, and the police may carry out checks regardless of suspicion.

According to a study by Leipzig University, however, the zone had hardly any impact on general crime. However, there have been no serious conflicts since then. The majority of residents wanted to see preventative measures against open drug dealing, littering and road rage.

To mark the opening of the new police station, there will now be an open day. A children's program and talks with citizen police officers are planned. In addition, a prevention team will provide information on the topics of burglary protection, grandchild fraud and current scams.
