More than nine months ago, a section of Dresden's central arterial road collapsed. It is now clear which option will replace the old structure.

Dresden's partially collapsed Carola Bridge is to be rebuilt as a four-lane replacement structure. This was decided by the city council of the Saxon state capital after a debate lasting around two hours. The AfD, CDU, FDP/Freie Bürger, BSW and Team Zastrow parliamentary groups voted in favor of the proposal for a bridge with four lanes. The SPD, Greens and Left voted against.

The new replacement structure proposed by Mayor Kühn has also been approved. By eliminating a time-consuming planning approval procedure, the new bridge should be completed three to six years earlier.

Removal of the bridge remains by the end of 2025

The western traffic section of the Carola Bridge collapsed unexpectedly on the night of 11 September 2024 over a length of around 100 meters. Demolition of the two parts still standing began last week. The remains of the structure should be completely removed by the end of the year.

According to previous information from the city, the reconstruction of the Carola Bridge is set to begin in 2027. The construction work is expected to take around two and a half years. The city council's decision clears the way for further planning.
