The Saxon state parliament has paved the way for a new training program for nursing assistants, which is set to begin in 2027. “With this modern career profile, we are enabling a practical, rapid entry into the nursing profession, sending a strong signal for the future of the industry, and ensuring quality care for our aging population,” said Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD). On Wednesday, the parliament passed a law that, among other things, designates the authorities responsible for the training program. The qualifications of graduates are to be standardized nationwide. The training program generally lasts 18 months. It can be shortened under certain conditions. In such cases, a previously unsuccessful attempt to complete training as a registered nurse may also be taken into account. Trainees must receive compensation. The costs are to be reimbursed to training providers and nursing schools. As with the registered nurse training program, administration will be handled through the Saxon Training Fund for Nursing Professions. “Not everyone can or wants to complete a three-year training program to become a registered nurse,” said Köpping. The new training program is therefore intended to appeal to additional target groups and create an incentive to work in nursing. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de).
