The funicular in Augustusburg near Chemnitz is out of service following a thunderstorm over the weekend. According to the Central Saxony Transportation Authority, the storm damaged the electrical system. As a result, the cable car’s safety systems are currently preventing it from operating.
Service on the funicular has therefore been suspended since Monday morning. According to reports, technicians are working to determine the exact cause of the malfunction. It is not yet clear when the funicular will be able to resume service.
The funicular went into service in 1911. Over a distance of approximately 1,240 meters, it climbs 168 meters in elevation from the valley station in Erdmannsdorf up to Augustusburg. Two cars are connected to each other by a steel cable. The ride takes about eight minutes. Approximately 80,000 passengers use the railway each year. The railway had only resumed operations in March following a winter break lasting several weeks and a comprehensive inspection.
