In 2025, Chemnitz was the European Capital of Culture; now the city is drawing visitors with theater productions from around the world. The countdown to the opening has begun.

The “Theater der Welt” festival in Chemnitz opens today (6:30 p.m.) with a musical theater production from Canada. It will bring more than 30 international theater productions to the city through July 5. The lineup ranges from pop opera, drama, and puppet theater to performance art and a production in which audience members use VR headsets to immerse themselves in a virtual world.

“Theater der Welt” is considered one of the most important international theater festivals in Germany. It takes place every three years. Frankfurt am Main and Offenbach most recently hosted the festival in 2023. The Chemnitz program is dedicated, among other things, to indigenous voices and perspectives.
