Ida is causing a stir at Dresden Zoo with her orange fur. The birth of the spectacled langur girl is a special success for the zoo.

For the first time, visitors to Dresden Zoo can marvel at a baby spectacled langur. The special thing about little Ida is her orange fur. This is the color that the young of this monkey species are born with, as curator Matthias Hendel explained. As with other Asian langurs, it only turns grey, the normal color of the species, after four to six months.

"This is very important," said Hendel. This makes the offspring stand out in the group so that everyone can concentrate on the young animal, look after it and protect it if there is any danger.

Ida was born in mid-February

Mother Latura gave birth to little Ida alone on February 16 after a gestation period of around five months. Keepers discovered the lively offspring during their morning patrol. "It was all picture-perfect and we were all delighted," recalled Hendel.

Also, the almost two-year-old brother Felipe is already looking after his sister. "He is allowed to carry the cub from time to time and take him from A to B. And that works very well," said Hendel. This relieves the mother and at the same time, Felipe is learning how to look after the young properly and how to behave in the group.

Glassy langurs threatened with extinction

Glassy langurs, a primate species from South-East Asia, are threatened with extinction and are on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). "They are mainly threatened by hunting, but also by habitat loss because the forests in which they occur are being cut down," said Hendel.

For Dresden Zoo, the birth is therefore a particularly big success. "Breeding in zoos is very important, especially for endangered species," explained Hendel. It is also the first offspring of spectacled langurs in Dresden. The family now consists of four animals. Mother Latura, father Apollo and almost two-year-old Felipe came to Dresden a year ago. The monkey species is currently kept in five zoos in Europe. According to the zoo, Ida is currently the only offspring.
