Green is not just a color in the political spectrum, but definitely stands for nature. In Leipzig, even the little ones will soon be able to deal with big questions about nature.

The Green Children's Days at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Leipzig will focus on "Animals with a backbone" next week. This is the motto of the two-day event on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Landesstiftung Natur und Umwelt (State Foundation for Nature and the Environment), the organizer of the event, has announced that many activities are planned for children of pre-school and primary school age relating to nature conservation. "With the Green Children's Days, we want to bring children into contact with our local nature at an early age. Only those who know the nature that surrounds them can learn to love it and treat it with care," emphasized foundation director Robert Clemen.

On both days, a "nature experience market" will offer a wide range of activities for experimenting, trying things out, watching, doing handicrafts and joining in. The stage program with puppet shows, music and talks suitable for children also picks up on this year's main theme. "The children will get answers to questions such as: What are vertebrates and which ones belong to them? What is the difference between rabbits and hares? Which animals lay eggs? Why are some animals endangered? What does a mouse need to live well - and what is a mouse anyway?"

The Green Children's Days have been held in Leipzig since 2005 and are aimed at preschool children and pupils in grades 1 and 2. According to the state foundation, the registration lists were quickly filled again this year - the event is already fully booked. Around 400 children are expected on both days combined.
