Atmospheric summer evenings on the market: the 25th Leipzig Wine Festival invites you to linger in the city center from 2 to 13 July. For the first time, the festival will extend beyond the market and into Petersstraße. The two Saxon wine princesses Janine Merkel and Antje Peschel will open the festival on July 2 at 5 pm on the market stage. All Leipzig residents are cordially invited to attend.
"After last year's EURO-related excursion to the Whitsun weekend, we have switched back to our 'regular date' this year. Word of the wine festival has now spread in winegrowing circles and we have a significant increase in applicants this year. We are using this demand to extend the area of the wine festival into the adjacent Peterstraße," says Dr. Walter Ebert, Head of the Market Office.
For the first time, the number of applicants so clearly exceeds the capacity of the marketplace that the wine festival will be larger so that no trader has to cancel. The wine festival will therefore go beyond the boundaries of the market square and extend into the Petersstraße area close to the market. Six stands will be placed there, which, in combination with the seating or a picnic blanket on the green area, will create completely new aspects.
There are seven new wineries and two new wine regions to be tasted this year. Despite its international character (France, Italy, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, Australia, California, South Africa), the festival also has a strong regional focus: Ten stands and wineries from Saxony and three more from the Saale-Unstrut region have a welcome home game at the Leipzig Wine Festival. The range of organic products and wines for people who were previously unable to enjoy wine due to food intolerances has also been expanded.
The wine festival is open daily from 12 noon. The winegrowers and restaurateurs can decide flexibly on their start to the day until 2 pm. At 11 pm sharp, the last round of drinks will be served, but it is possible to finish your drink until 11:30 pm. On the last day, the bar closes at 8 pm. Ute Schlossarek and the wine princesses will host the opening and provide the musical prelude with her band. There will be a live program on the wine festival stage every day from 6:30 pm. The food stands will also be offering typical wine dishes to go with the wine: Tarte flambée, pretzel pastries, cheese, but also the classic range of snacks.
The wine festival is freely accessible, seating is available in large numbers - there is no need to make a reservation. At www.leipzig.de/weinfest, visitors will find an overview of all participants with a digital location map, the respective contact details and the offer and price lists.
The city center weekly market will be relocated to Augustusplatz during the wine festival. It will open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. between July 1 and 11. It will be back on the market from July 15.
