Thousands have already gathered on the shores of the Bleilochtalsperre reservoir near Saalburg—and now one of Germany’s largest open-air festivals for electronic dance music is kicking off. More than 33,000 music fans are expected to attend the SonneMondSterne festival in Thuringia through Sunday, said Philipp Helmers of the event organizer in Saalburg. “The very last festival tickets are currently being sold online.” Day passes have long since sold out.
Even before the main program began on the eight stages late Friday afternoon, the campsites for festivalgoers were already well-filled, according to Helmers. Visitors can choose between areas where music plays and partying continues into the night and so-called “quiet areas” for guests seeking peace and quiet.
The first events had already begun as early as Wednesday. A total of 140 DJs and bands are scheduled to perform in the main program over the three days through Sunday. “The sounds are very diverse. Trends in electronic music change quickly.” Techno and electro genres are strongly represented. The SonneMondSterne Festival has been around for 28 years.
