From Titanic musicals to Schiller comedies: Theater Chemnitz is focusing on classics and new material in the coming season. The theater makers are thus bracing themselves against uncertain times.

In view of the debate about the future of Chemnitz Theatre, the five-division theater wants to demonstrate its wide artistic range in the coming season. The city will continue to need fully-fledged theatres and the opera house in the future, emphasized General Director Christoph Dittrich at the presentation of the programme. "Because a theater like ours thrives on the diversity of its disciplines and stages - on the interplay of different artistic forms and perspectives." The 2026/27 season therefore offers major premieres, innovative formats and offerings for all generations.

Different options for the theater are currently being discussed in Chemnitz. The existing building is dilapidated and the cost of renovation has exploded. A new building is being discussed as an alternative. Recently, however, a proposal from the city council caused great uncertainty, according to which the opera and drama stages are to be merged.

Mixture of classics and new material

In the coming season, the theater will not only focus on classics such as the operas "Tannhäuser" and "Le nozze di Figaro" or the ballet evenings "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker". It is also bringing the internationally acclaimed musical "Titanic" to the opera house stage for the first time. In addition, the successful production "Rummelplatz" will be represented with further dates in the schedule - all previous performances have reportedly been sold out.

The ballet ensemble is dedicating a choreography to the Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen, while the drama department aims to shine with twelve premieres: from Friedrich Schiller's comedy "The Parasite" to the cult musical "Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "I am your human" about questions of identity and love in the age of artificial intelligence.

The puppet theater is celebrating its 75th anniversary at the beginning of December with a week of festivities and the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra is putting on symphony concerts as well as extraordinary events such as "Swing! Groove! Mozart!" with jazzy arrangements of works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the Industrial Museum.

In total, the Chemnitz municipal theaters are presenting more than 30 premieres and just as many concerts in the coming season. Tickets go on sale on May 18.
