Saxony is desperately looking for doctors in the province. This is why a model degree course in human medicine was set up in Chemnitz in 2020. The theoretical part of the course has now been completed.

Done: The first students of human medicine at the Chemnitz Medical Campus have completed the theoretical part of their studies and are now starting their practical year. "We have taken a completely new path with the MEDiC model degree program and have further developed medical studies in Saxony. With a clear focus on medical care in rural areas and with partner institutions that provide practical training in the indispensable profession of doctor during their studies," explained Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow (CDU).

Majority of students want to stay in the region

According to the Minister, the majority of students from the first year are planning to continue their careers in the region. "This is a great success and proves that it was the right decision to establish the model degree course here in Chemnitz. In the coalition agreement, we agreed to make the course permanent."

New medical talent for rural areas

Once the students have successfully completed their practical year, they will receive their license to practice medicine. The course should not only increase the number of medical study places in the Free State by 50. Above all, it is about the next generation of doctors in rural areas. The course is organized by the Faculty of Medicine at the Technical University of Dresden. The students are practically enrolled in Dresden, but are trained in Chemnitz. Klinikum Chemnitz GmbH is a cooperation partner.
