Five gold medals at AWC Vienna 2026 – additional awards at Mundus Vini

Schloss Wackerbarth shines at international wine competitions: At the spring tasting of the Austrian Wine Challenge (AWC) Vienna 2026, five wines and sparkling wines from the Saxon State Winery were awarded gold medals. A total of 4,486 wines from 34 countries underwent blind tasting by an international panel of experts.

Gold medals were awarded to the 2024 dry Riesling from the Golden Wagen, the 2024 Traminer Spätlese from the Golden Wagen, and the 2024 dry Pinot Blanc from Thonberg in Laubach. The sparkling wines 2023 Riesling brut and Bussard Royal Réserve brut were also awarded gold. According to Henri’s Wine Guide Germany 2026, the Bussard sparkling wine is also rated “absolute world class” with five grapes.

The wines from the Elbe Valley also impressed at the international competition Mundus Vini . Gold medals went here to the 2024 Bacchus dry, the 2024 Riesling Kabinett from Paradies, the 2024 Riesling Spätlese from Wackerbarthberg, and once again to the 2024 Pinot Blanc dry from Laubacher Thonberg.

“The awards are a wonderful confirmation of our work in the vineyard and in the cellar,” says Jürgen Aumüller, oenological director of Schloss Wackerbarth. At the same time, he notes, the international recognition strengthens the profile of the Saxony wine region. The results showed that the natural cultivation of the vineyards, as well as continuous quality development, are bearing fruit. In addition, the Saxon cool-climate style is gaining increasing national and international attention.

About the Competitions

The AWC Vienna is one of the largest international wine competitions worldwide. All wines and sparkling wines are evaluated anonymously in blind tastings using the internationally recognized 100-point system. The jury consists of oenologists, sommeliers, wine merchants, restaurateurs, and wine journalists.

For 25 years, Mundus Vini has been one of the most prestigious state-recognized wine competitions in the world. Twice a year, expert judges from around 40 countries evaluate the submitted wines and sparkling wines in blind tastings using the 100-point scale.
