The supply of dentists is also dwindling in Saxony. At the same time, the barriers to practicing for specialists with a non-EU qualification are high.

Foreign dentists will receive more support when entering the profession in Saxony. Starting next week, they will be able to prepare for the necessary dental knowledge test in a two-day course, as announced by the Saxony Chamber of Dentists (LZKS) in Dresden on Thursday. According to the LZKS, the course is the first of its kind in Germany and is aimed at specialists who have graduated outside of the EU.

Foreign dentists are needed, with the same quality, said LZKS President Thomas Breyer. "However, the recognition process, which often takes several years, and a frequent lack of structured preparation for the examination lead to a high failure rate of over 75 percent nationwide." The preparatory course is intended to make it easier to enter the German profession and increase the chances of successfully practising the profession.

According to the LZKS, in order to practise as a dentist in Germany, the necessary specialist language skills and an equivalent level of training must be demonstrated.
