After the Ferris wheel and slide tower, Sonnenlandpark is aiming high with another attraction. Here's what it's all about.

The Sonnenlandpark in Lichtenau near Chemnitz wants to impress visitors in future with a 65-metre high adventure pyramid. Civil engineering work began at the beginning of April and the foundation stone has now been laid. The operator of the leisure park put the investment at 2.5 million euros. Tourism Minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU) spoke of another "forward-looking offer for family and nature tourism in Saxony".

The new attraction is to have a cone shape - based on the pyramids and incense cones of the Ore Mountains. The 35-hectare park already attracts visitors with a Ferris wheel visible from afar and a 35-metre-high slide tower. The adventure pyramid is to have a viewing platform from which a slide spirals down around the staircase. In addition, a "skywalk" will connect the new attraction with the existing slide tower. An elevator will also provide access for people with walking disabilities.

Partial opening planned for the fall

The partial opening of the adventure pyramid is planned for the fall. According to the Schleith family, who run the park, it recently attracted more than a quarter of a million visitors a year. When choosing the new attraction, a conscious decision was made not to build a roller coaster. "This would not fit in with the attraction and environmental concept of our Sonnenlandpark."

The Sonnenlandpark on the Autobahn 4 celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026. In Saxony, a whole host of other amusement parks are vying for the attention of families and school classes. These include the Belantis amusement park near Leipzig, the Plohn amusement park in Vogtland, Karl's Adventure Village in Döbeln, the Oskarshausen park in Freital and the Kleinwelka dinosaur park near Bautzen.
