According to media reports, VW is initially sticking with the Zwickau site for the production of the ID.3. This is due to unanswered questions regarding the production of new electric models within the Group.

The Volkswagen Group is extending production of the ID.3 model at its Saxon site near Zwickau. This is due to changes in the Group-wide planning for the production of new electric models such as the ID-Roc and the ID-Golf due to "unresolved production issues", as reported by the "Handelsblatt" newspaper. According to a report in "Freie Presse", the second Zwickau production line for the Cupra Born is also to be retained.

VW Saxony did not confirm the change in the Group's plans. "We are aware of the statements in the press. However, the decision on the plant allocation and the associated model shifts will be made in the VW planning round in November," said company spokesman Christian Sommer.

Future of the Zwickau plant unclear in the long term

Originally, the VW models ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and the Cupra Born produced in Zwickau were to move to Wolfsburg and Emden. The Audi Q4 e-tron models and its estate variant, the Q4 e-tron Sportback, would then have been the only models still built in Zwickau from 2027. This was agreed by the company and the works council as part of the wage compromise shortly before Christmas last year.

According to dpa information, it remains to be seen what will happen after the Audi models are phased out from 2030. Back in February, Der Spiegel reported on internal considerations within the Group to relocate at least part of Audi production from Zwickau to the USA.

The job security for the approximately 9,500 employees at the Zwickau plant negotiated with the wage compromise applies until 2030.
