Technology manufacturer Altech is discontinuing its planned battery production project at the Schwarze Pumpe Industrial Park in Lusatia. The nine-month search for a strategic partner and talks with a globally active German industrial conglomerate did not yield the desired result, Altech Advanced Materials AG in Heidelberg announced. Altech had planned to build a plant on the Brandenburg-Saxony border to produce advanced ceramic batteries that do not require materials such as lithium or cobalt. To this end, the company had entered into an agreement with the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS). These batteries are intended for the power grid.
In 2022, it was reported that planning for the plant was to be completed by mid-2023. According to its own statements to date, the Fraunhofer Institute holds a 25 percent stake in the joint venture.
