The police cleared a squat in the east of Leipzig on Wednesday evening. According to the police, the operation took place at around 8.30 p.m. and two men and two women were found. After clarifying their identities, charges of trespassing were filed. Around 100 people took part in a gathering in support of the squat on Wednesday evening, which was said to have been peaceful.
The property in Einertstraße appears to have been used as an address for a letterbox company for almost 15 years, according to the group "Leipzig Besetzen". They had been unable to make contact with the owner. "We could no longer stand by and watch this building continue to gather dust and have therefore decided to move in."
Leipzig city councillor and member of the state parliament Juliane Nagel (Left Party) supported the squatters' demands. "If vacancies are deliberately accepted and housing is speculated on, consistent action must be taken," she wrote in a post on Platform X. She also shared a photo of the squatted house in Einerstraße, in which several banners can be seen on the façade of the old building.
