Consumer prices in Saxony are rising again. The inflation rate stood at 2.8 percent in July, according to a report by the State Statistical Office in Kamenz based on preliminary data. In June, the rate had been 2.3 percent.
Price trends varied across different sectors. At gas stations, drivers had to pay 21.9 percent more than in the same month last year. Prices for alcohol and tobacco also rose—by 4.8 percent year-over-year. In contrast, food prices increased only slightly, by 0.7 percent.
Ahead of the start of the new school year, prices also rose for art supplies (2.8 percent), schoolbooks and textbooks (2.3 percent), and fountain pens and ballpoint pens (8.9 percent). Clothing, on the other hand, became 2.3 percent cheaper during the summer sales season.
