One patient is still being treated after the rampage - his condition is stable. Hospital director Josten describes how the university hospital reacted to the situation and what could have been done.

After the rampage in Leipzig's city center, an injured patient is still being treated at Leipzig University Hospital. "He is doing well, according to the circumstances," said the Medical Director of the hospital, Christoph Josten. Whether an operation is necessary "will be decided in the next few days".

Quick processes in the emergency department

The hospital reacted immediately after becoming aware of the crime. "We have well-established processes where an information chain is then set in motion," said Josten. Employees knew exactly where they were needed. In the central emergency department, teams of nurses, surgeons and anaesthetists were formed. "That was set up perfectly."

It is often impossible to estimate how many injured people to expect at the beginning. "The damage situation cannot be determined within five minutes," said Josten. That's why the control centre decides on the distribution of patients depending on the severity of the injuries.

Great commitment of the employees

The head of the hospital emphasized the commitment of the employees. "The amazing and fantastic thing is the willingness and spontaneity with which all employees are available." There had also been calls asking employees to come from home.

In principle, the hospital had been prepared for a large number of seriously injured people. According to Josten, four to six seriously injured people could have been treated immediately.

High standard in Germany

According to him, the treatment of such situations is generally well organized in Germany. "I believe that we have a very high uniform standard for the care of such injured people throughout Germany."
