Secure bike parking spaces are in short supply at Saxony’s train stations. What particularly frustrates commuters in Leipzig, Dresden, and Chemnitz—and why Torgau is now seen as a model.

Train stations in Saxony have a significant need to catch up when it comes to safe bicycle parking spaces. More than half of the 511 train stations in the Free State failed the assessment of bicycle parking facilities, according to the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) Saxony. According to the report, 173 train stations in Saxony have no bicycle parking facilities at all.

In contrast, 115 train stations (22 percent) received a good or very good rating. At these 115 stations, there is at least one covered and theft-proof parking space for every tenth passenger boarding, according to the ADFC’s analysis.

High Rates of Theft and Vandalism at Train Stations

According to the data, train stations in particular are considered hotspots for bicycle theft. The number of parked bikes there is usually high, and social oversight is often low, said Janek Mücksch, chairman of ADFC Saxony. “There are more and more e-bikes and high-quality bikes on the road. Commuters who combine biking and rail travel expect secure parking spaces at the station that protect against vandalism and theft.”

Saxony’s major cities bring up the rear

According to the report, there are significant differences among Saxony’s districts. While parking facilities in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district averaged a grade of only 4.8, stations in the Leipzig district received an average grade of 3.3. Here, 42 percent of stations have good facilities.

In contrast, Saxony’s major cities did not fare well in the study: In Leipzig, 43 percent of stations have no parking facilities or inadequate ones. In Chemnitz, 62 percent failed to meet standards, and in Dresden, the figure was as high as 77 percent.

To encourage more people to feel confident about parking their bikes at train stations, stations must be equipped with modern bike parking facilities. “Theft-proof parking facilities make commuting by train more attractive and revitalize the station plaza. Municipalities and transit authorities should quickly make improvements at the stations with inadequate facilities,” Mücksch urged.

Top marks for stations in North Saxony and the Erzgebirge District

Seventeen stations in Saxony received the top grade of 1 in the survey. Four of them are located in the North Saxony district, and three in the Erzgebirge District. These stations feature a large number of covered and theft-proof parking facilities, as well as lockable bike lockers or communal locking systems.

The inspectors rated the station in Torgau particularly highly. According to the report, there are 256 high-quality bicycle parking spaces available here, 64 of which are in a locked bicycle parking garage. For this, the city on the Elbe received the 2026 Saxony Bicycle Award from the ADFC. With this award, the cycling club recognizes particularly positive examples of promoting cycling in Saxony.
