In Saxony, nearly one in five new cars is an electric vehicle. How does the Free State compare to the rest of Germany in this regard?

Nearly one in five new passenger cars registered in Saxony in the first half of 2026 was an electric car. According to statistics from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, 43,350 passenger cars were newly registered in the Free State of Saxony during the first six months. Of these, 8,255 were battery electric vehicles (BEVs). When the 4,090 newly registered plug-in hybrids are added, the share of passenger cars with electric powertrains rises to 28.5 percent.

Nationwide, the share of electric cars among new registrations was higher: Of approximately 1.48 million newly registered passenger cars, 368,000 were pure electric cars. That is about one-quarter, or one in every four vehicles. Together with just under 164,000 plug-in hybrids, 35.8 percent of newly registered vehicles in the first half of the year had an electric powertrain.
