Highway 72 will be closed for a week and a half in the direction of Leipzig due to heat damage at the Chemnitz interchange. Starting Monday, a 500-meter section of the roadway will undergo emergency repairs, according to the federal government’s Autobahn GmbH. Drivers will be rerouted starting at the Chemnitz-Mitte interchange. Work is scheduled to begin at 7:00 a.m. on Monday and continue into the night of July 28–29.
The concrete roadway at the affected section was already damaged due to its age. During the recent heatwave, cracks formed primarily in areas that had already been repaired, which could lead to further spalling and potholes, according to Autobahn GmbH. To ensure traffic safety, the repair work is urgently needed.
