Following the arrest of a 48-year-old man in connection with the sabotage attacks on the power grid, Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster warned against jumping to conclusions about the motives behind the crimes. “The case is indeed extraordinary in terms of how the crime was committed and the nature of the confession,” said the CDU politician in Dresden.

Schuster: Confession Letter Mysterious

Schuster described the confession letter as mysterious. The content is unusual for a self-incriminating statement. The motive is barely mentioned. Furthermore, it was handwritten and included a full address, as if the perpetrator wanted to be caught.

It could be a case of left-wing extremism or related to climate issues. However, it is also possible that the perpetrator acted on someone’s orders. Schuster declined to comment on who might be behind a potential order. “I don’t want to speculate,” Schuster emphasized. However, he said the likelihood that this is a case similar to the drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport is low.

North Rhine-Westphalian police arrested a 48-year-old man this morning near the Weisweiler power plant near Aachen. He is suspected of being responsible for a series of acts of sabotage against the power grid at several locations in North Rhine-Westphalia, Brandenburg, and Saxony. The man had been wanted under an arrest warrant issued by the Cottbus Public Prosecutor’s Office.
