Marko Schiemann, a CDU politician from Saxony, warns of dramatic losses in the auto industry at the VW plant in Zwickau. “This is not a development that affects only the region around Zwickau, but also has repercussions for companies in Upper Lusatia,” he told the German Press Agency. “During the dramatic job losses 30 years ago, small and medium-sized enterprises in Upper Lusatia found an opportunity in the supplier industry for automakers,” Schiemann emphasized. Due to mistakes made at the corporate leadership level during the transition to electric mobility, 300 jobs have already been lost in Upper Lusatia. Companies such as Motorenwerk Cunewalde, PCS Cunewalde, and Werkzeugbau Doberschau have been shut down.

“Another round of job losses is unacceptable for Upper Lusatia,” Schiemann emphasized. The VW Group must continue producing fully electric vehicles while fulfilling its responsibility toward suppliers. “The Upper Lusatian economy needs reliability for the future.”

Nationwide campaign against impending plant closures

IG Metall is fighting back with nationwide actions against impending plant closures and further job cuts at Volkswagen. The VW supervisory board was scheduled to meet this afternoon to discuss new cost-cutting plans for the group. Four plants are facing closure, including the Zwickau site. VW is the largest private employer in Saxony. In Zwickau alone, 8,000 employees work for the company.
