After Record Diesel Prices—Gas Prices Are Particularly High in Saxony

Drivers in Saxony are feeling the impact of record-high gas prices particularly hard. According to the fuel price portal Tankerkönig, filling up in Saxony is currently particularly expensive compared to the rest of the country. The data underlying this comes from the Market Transparency Unit for Fuels at the Federal Cartel Office. 

Four Eastern States with the Highest Diesel Prices

In Saxony, as well as in the other eastern states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, and Berlin, diesel prices are the highest in Germany. In the afternoon, a liter of diesel cost an average of 2.579 euros in all four states. That is 11 cents more than in Saarland, where the price is lowest at 2.469 euros.

When it comes to gasoline, Saxony ranks second to last. According to the data, a liter of E10 costs an average of 2.429 euros. It was only slightly more expensive in Brandenburg (2.439 euros). The Saarland also ranks highest for E10, at 2.294 euros.

Within Saxony, the differences are smaller. Dresden residents have to dig particularly deep into their pockets for diesel. There, the average price is 2.589 euros. In the Görlitz district, Saxon drivers get the best deal at 2.549 euros per liter of diesel. Across Saxony, E10 was most expensive in the Zwickau district at 2.439 euros and cheapest in the Bautzen district at 2.419 euros.

Prices in Saxony Regularly Above Average

Although gas prices at gas stations fluctuate several times a day, Saxony is usually above the national average, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Reasons for this include a low density of gas stations and greater distances to refineries, which lead to higher logistics costs.

On Wednesday, the nationwide daily average price for diesel reached a new record. One liter cost 2.453 euros, surpassing the previous record set in April by 0.6 cents, according to figures from the ADAC. Gasoline has been at record levels for days. On Wednesday, it reached its fifth consecutive high at 2.314 euros per liter.
