Bäcker Lampe has filed for bankruptcy, but its stores in Thuringia, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt will continue to sell bread rolls. Here’s what the restructuring process means for employees and customers.

Bäcker Lampe, a bakery company operating in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, has filed for insolvency and initiated restructuring proceedings. Business operations and all branches will remain open, according to insolvency administrator Frank Kreuznacht. The wages and salaries of the approximately 280 employees will be covered by the Employment Agency until the end of July.

The company has its headquarters and production facility in Roßleben-Wiehe, Thuringia, and currently operates 44 branches in Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, and Thuringia. According to the information provided, the business is family-owned and is being run by the sixth generation of family members.

“The proceedings have no impact on our day-to-day business,” explained Managing Director and Master Baker André Lampe. “We’re continuing to bake as usual; all our branches and cafés remain open, and our customers can still get their rolls, bread, and cakes there as usual.”

Personnel and energy costs are weighing on the business

Many bakery companies are under economic pressure. Sharply rising personnel and energy costs, as well as inflation and consumer reluctance to spend, are weighing on the business, the company said. “To ensure we are economically stable again in the long term, we are now fundamentally realigning ourselves operationally and financially. The self-administration procedure offers the appropriate tools for this,” Lampe emphasized. Several media outlets had previously reported on the insolvency.

During the proceedings, management retains operational responsibility. Management acted proactively and initiated restructuring proceedings early on, said Kreuznacht, the provisional insolvency administrator appointed by the Mühlhausen Local Court. According to his own statements, the insolvency administrator has assisted a large number of bakery businesses in crisis situations in recent years.
