Good news for many car owners in Saxony: According to the latest regional statistics, numerous auto insurance policyholders in the Free State will be assigned a lower regional class. For liability insurance, the approximately 270,000 drivers in Meissen and the Leipzig district are moving down to a lower regional class, according to the German Insurance Association (GDV). In Chemnitz and the districts of Bautzen, Görlitz, and Leipzig, 315,000 policyholders will benefit from a lower regional class for comprehensive auto insurance. For partial coverage, everything remains the same. The association has recalculated the claims records and regional classes for the 413 vehicle registration districts in Germany. The regional class is calculated based on the claims record of a vehicle registration district. However, the amount of an individual’s insurance premium depends on several factors. These include, for example, the vehicle and its type class, annual mileage, and trends in repair costs. The Mittelsachsen district achieved the best claims record for auto liability insurance in the Free State of Saxony. In Dresden, the claims record was the worst, as the GDV further reported. GDV Chief Executive Jörg Asmussen explained, referring to Germany as a whole: “For 5.2 million drivers in 63 registration districts, the regional class is improving; for 4.8 million in 46 districts, it is rising. Where a car is registered makes a significant difference in the claims record. Large cities, in particular, often fare worse than rural regions.” For the vast majority, nothing will change. In 304 registration districts with more than 32 million drivers, the regional class for auto liability insurance will remain unchanged. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de).
