The prolonged drought is taking a toll on Saxony’s rivers. But while power plants in other states are being scaled back as a result, the operator Leag sees no risk to the cooling water supply for the lignite-fired power plants in the Free State. “It has never happened before that power plants had to be shut down due to a lack of water,” says spokesperson Thoralf Schirmer in response to a dpa inquiry.
This is also due to the fact that they are not operating at full capacity in the summer anyway because of the high supply of solar power. As a result, the demand for cooling water is lower. Unit S at the Lippendorf site near Leipzig is currently undergoing maintenance, says Schirmer.
