Buses Instead of Trains: Train passengers traveling between Zwickau and Leipzig will need to allow more time in the coming weeks and months and, in some cases, switch to buses. This is due to track closures from August 17 through December 12 to consolidate construction work around the Gößnitz rail hub and at the Werdau station, according to Deutsche Bahn. According to the information provided, on the Zwickau-Altenburg section alone, this will extend the travel time from the current 35 to 44 minutes to about one and a half hours.
This is part of the expansion of the Saxony-Franconia Main Line, which stretches 288 kilometers from Dresden and Leipzig to southern Germany. In the future, trains are expected to travel at speeds of up to 160 km/h on this route, and the line will also be used more extensively for interregional freight transport from the seaports to the south. According to the information provided, approximately 330 million euros will be invested in the Gößnitz-Crimmitschau section alone. However, due to shortages of skilled labor and materials, completion will be delayed by about a year, officials said. The work was originally scheduled to be completed this year.
