After years of cost-cutting, the Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports are back on track. Now the goal is to prepare the airports for the future.

According to their own statements, the Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports have completed their financial restructuring about half a year earlier than planned. Following confirmation from the financing partners and a final assessment, the completion—originally scheduled for the end of 2026—was achieved as early as July 3, Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG (MFAG) announced.

Focus Now on Growth

After years of restructuring, the company now intends to focus on the further development of the airports. The focus is on the economic development of the Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports, as well as on tapping into new growth and revenue potential. The goal is to strengthen the airports’ competitiveness in the long term.

Redesign plans are under further review

The transformation phase that has now been announced is likely to include the previously announced plans for the airports’ further development. Among other things, MFAG is examining plans for a smaller new terminal in Dresden as well as new procedures for passenger and baggage handling at both locations. According to the company, concrete decisions have not yet been made.

Company Sees Course Set for the Future

MFAG CEO Götz Ahmelmann emphasized that the restructuring was never the actual goal, but rather a prerequisite for “being able to actively shape the future of our airports again.”

Returned to Profit for the First Time

As early as the 2025 fiscal year, MFAG had returned to profit for the first time after years of heavy losses. According to the company, the bottom line showed a net profit of 10.5 million euros. At the same time, the group exceeded the 200 million euro revenue mark for the first time. According to MFAG, the group’s financing is secured through 2038.
