Farmers in Saxony are increasingly focusing on biodiversity and animal welfare. The Minister of Agriculture believes this is the right approach.

Saxon farmers will receive 55 million euros in funding for environmentally conscious agriculture this week. In total, more than 3,500 applications for funding will be approved for the 2025 application year, the Ministry of Agriculture announced.

Land programs funded by the EU and federal government

Around 33.8 million euros will come from the "Agri-environmental and climate measures" funding guideline. They will be used to preserve species-rich grassland and extensively farmed fields as valuable habitats for insects, amphibians and birds. They also support the protection of the climate, water and soil.

The remaining approximately 21.1 million euros are allocated via the "Organic Farming" guideline, which is aimed at sustainable land management: Farms that do not use synthetic chemical pesticides and adhere to higher animal welfare standards such as outdoor access or grazing. Both state programs are financed by EU and federal funds.

Von Breitenbuch: Protecting nature and remaining sustainable

Minister of Agriculture Georg-Ludwig von Breitenbuch described the funding as a strong signal. "More and more farmers in Saxony are taking the opportunity to make their farms more environmentally friendly and climate-friendly," said the CDU politician according to a press release. "This is exactly the path we want to support - for a diverse agriculture that protects nature and at the same time remains sustainable."
