A move by Saxony to end the permanent employment of teachers has met with rejection at the conference of state education ministers. The current chair of the conference, Bavaria's Education Minister Anna Stolz (Free Voters), told journalists in Berlin.
It had become clear that this issue was not supported by the conference of education ministers. "A truly overwhelming majority of the federal states see no reason for a change and continue to adhere unreservedly to the permanent employment of teachers." For the states, this is a key factor for the quality, stability and attractiveness of the teaching profession. The initiative from Saxony had therefore "clearly failed".
Saxony's Minister of Education Conrad Clemens had campaigned for an end to the permanent appointment of teachers. The CDU politician justified this with financial challenges, as high provisions are required for pensions. This is why there are similar considerations in several federal states, he said on MDR at the beginning of the week.
