Are VW Plants in Jeopardy? Executive Board Member Blume in Emden and Zwickau

What’s next for Volkswagen’s plants? Following his kickoff in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume will travel to Emden and Zwickau on Wednesday. Extraordinary town hall meetings have been called at both of the automaker’s plants, where VW management is expected to answer questions from the workforce regarding the announced cost-cutting measures.

Production facilities in East Frisia and Saxony have been the focus of attention since the announcement of further cost-cutting plans. According to VW management, these sites—along with the VW Commercial Vehicles plant in Hanover and the Audi plant in Neckersulm—are among those for which there is still no competitive use planned for the 2030s. 

“But that doesn’t mean plant closures have been decided,” Blume has repeatedly emphasized recently. The goal is to create solid prospects for all locations over the next six to twelve months. In Emden and Zwickau, VW has invested heavily in the transition to electric mobility in recent years.
