From June, new S-Bahn trains will be running between Halle, Leipzig and Zwickau. What passengers can expect on the S5 and S5X lines - and how Länderbahn has prepared for the switch from DB Regio.

Commuters on several S-Bahn routes between Halle, Leipzig and Zwickau will gradually benefit from new and larger trains from mid-June. Länderbahn presented its new Mireo vehicles on Friday during a premiere trip between Halle and Markkleeberg-Gaschwitz. They will initially be used on individual connections on the S5 and S5X lines.

First deployments from June 14

According to the company, the first deployments in regular passenger service will begin with the minor timetable change on June 14. The new trains will then initially run on individual connections between Halle-Trotha and Zwickau. Länderbahn will take over operation of the S-Bahn lines S3, S5 and S5X from DB Regio at the timetable change in December.

More space on heavily used routes

During the presentation trip, two three-car Mireo trains were coupled to form a double traction. Together, they reached a length of around 140 meters. The new vehicles are intended to provide more space, especially on the high-demand connections in the Halle-Leipzig metropolitan area.

Saxony-Anhalt's Minister of Infrastructure, Lydia Hüskens, emphasized the importance of attractive local transport services. "Mobility means freedom. Freedom also includes a real choice of means of transport," said the FDP politician. The use of the new vehicles is an example of this and, above all, ensures greater reliability on the route.

Preparations underway for change of operator

According to Länderbahn, preparations for the takeover of operations are going according to plan. Since being awarded the contract in 2023, the company has hired the majority of the 350 additional employees required. Of a total of 41 railcars ordered, 23 have now been delivered, approved and accepted. They are currently being used for training trips, among other things.

Länderbahn Managing Director Stephan Naue said: "Despite the many tasks, we are well on schedule with our preparations."
