Three goals from corners: Magdeburg win in Kiel

1. FC Magdeburg are on the verge of securing their place in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Elbe city team won 3:1 (2:0) at Holstein Kiel in front of 14,678 spectators. Jean Hugonet (40), Dariusz Stalmach (45 + 2) and Baris Atik (55) scored for FCM, Adrian Kapralik (90 + 2) for Kiel. With 39 points, the Elbe club are in twelfth place in the table, have avoided direct relegation and could celebrate their final relegation on the couch on Sunday.

"I said to the substitutes: I'll try it straight away. I don't think they believed me," said Atik about his directly converted corner. "I take my hat off to my team because it's not a matter of course to perform like that in such a situation, score goals like that and control the game like that," praised coach Petrik Sander.

Magdeburg dangerous from set-pieces

Silas Gnaka was missing from Magdeburg's midfield for personal reasons, Sander replaced him with Stalmach - but was otherwise able to rely on the winning starting eleven from the last home game against Hertha BSC. Magdeburg took control of the game in the opening minutes, with Holstein goalkeeper Timon Weiner saving Atik's first shot (6'). The hosts then got into the game better and pushed FCM back.

Magdeburg lacked the ideas to break free from their grip, but at least the Blue & Whites did not allow the "Storks" to score many goals. The game tended to take place between the penalty areas, with the hosts having the advantage. However, FCM took the lead: Hugonet pushed a second ball over the line following a corner. The scenario was repeated in stoppage time: After another corner, Stalmach headed home to make it 2-0.

Atik's feat clinches the game

After the break, Holstein remained the more active team, Magdeburg pulled back a little and defended attentively, albeit at the cost of numerous corners. They posed little danger, but FCM increased the lead to 3:0 when Alexander Nollenberger failed to beat Weiner after a counter-attack. Atik converted the subsequent corner directly. Kiel switched offensively and struggled to close the gap, but Kapralik's goal in stoppage time came too late.
