Following the Nordic combined’s exclusion from the Olympics, Vogtland District Administrator Thomas Hennig (CDU) fears the move will also have repercussions for Klingenthal, home to the national training center. “Ultimately, an entire region depends on this sport,” Hennig told “MDR Sachsenspiegel.” If the sport is no longer an Olympic discipline, funding would be cut and fewer subsidies would be paid out.
Klingenthal has held the status of a national training center for the German Ski Association since 2009. Together with Oberwiesenthal, it is recognized by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) as a national training center for Nordic skiing. Klingenthal is also home to a ski boarding school for young elite athletes.
