Raum's Future Remains Uncertain: RB Leipzig's Future Is Up in the Air

National team player David Raum avoided giving a clear answer when asked about his future with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig. “I’m a player for RB Leipzig. Of course, I’ve heard a few rumors here and there, which is naturally also due to my contract situation—there’s no need to beat around the bush,” said Raum. “All I can say is that I haven’t spoken with any other club. From the very beginning, I’ve simply been focused on myself and my preparation.”

With just one week left in the transfer window, Raum wouldn’t be pressured into giving a definitive “yes.” The players have their agents to handle discussions with other clubs anyway. The 28-year-old is under contract with Leipzig for just one more year. In early August, Raum mentioned at training camp that he hadn’t received any other offers yet. Normally, the motto at RB in such situations is: extend the contract or sell.

Enjoying his final contract year

The fact is that Raum remains captain and a fixture at left back under new coach Martin Demichelis. The defensive specialist emphasized that his focus is solely on the season opener against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky). “I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, but I haven’t heard anything new,” said Raum. “I’m a player for RB Leipzig; I’m now entering the final year of my contract, and I’m enjoying that as captain here.”

There is reportedly interest in the World Cup participant from time to time, but nothing concrete has emerged yet. Most recently, Manchester United was reportedly interested in the Franconian player.

For now, Raum’s focus is therefore on Leipzig—and the nearly finalized loan of Christopher Nkunku. “He’s a player with a lot of experience who’s been here for a few years now. He’s probably taken the next steps in his development and has also matured as a person,” said the defender. Nkunku is someone who can lead by example.
